• Beautiful views, no privacy

  The view of the harbor and the strait beyond is tremendous, as depicted in the photos. We spent much time gazing out to sea and watching the ships and small craft coming and going. We also enjoyed seeing a family of deer who had made a home on the grounds. However, there were some drawbacks that are worth mentioning for the benefit of other prospective renters. There is a rule prohibiting the wearing of shoes inside, which is rather onerous especially when loading and unloading the car for the day or the week. Also, there are some spots on the wood floor which are slick enough to be hazardous when wearing only socks, and at least one nail protruding from the wood that we found with our bare feet. Also troublesome was the absence of coverings for the bathroom windows – particularly the 1st floor bathroom which is adjacent to the patio and the path to the back yard. We were compelled to tape towels up in order to have any privacy. The owner imposed an unusual requirement to meet a property management representative prior to check-in so we could sign a waiver. The language in the waiver would have required us to assume liability for any damage occurring as a result of incidents beyond our control. Further, it proved difficult to elicit a response from the owner when multiple maintenance problems were discovered over several days.

  We had a fantastic time. The house is walking distance to great restaurants and the view from the yard is breathtaking. Wonderful vacation with friends.

• Be prepared to feel unwelcome

  Based on the check-in process, the checkout instructions and the policies it is very clear that the homeowners do not want you in their home. It was an expensive vacation rental and it honestly put a huge damper on my entire visit. I would not recommend this rental to anyone. I was required to sign a contract stating I would pay 1500 if anyone wore shoes in the house. This visit was for my mother‘s 80th birthday and it was extremely difficult for her to remove her shoes every time she walked in the house. The checkout instructions state they will charge you three times the cost for any dishes or linens missing. You are required to check out by 10 AM. The instructions require you to run and empty the dishwasher, bring all the garbage from every trashcan, including the bathrooms to the street, strip every bed and fold every blanket. This is a lot to ask for a 10 AM check out.

  From the owner: Hi Ryan, we are sorry to hear that our home did not meet your expectations. We would like to clarify a few points;
  
  - We have rules that are put in place to protect our historic and valuable home. Our home is a 115+ year old historic and renovated home, and we care for our home deeply.
  Regarding the request not to wear shoes inside, we've learned that many of our guests have allergies, and not having shoes worn in the home prevents outside pathogens from being carried inside the house for both current and future guests. We do allow for "house shoes", so long as they are never worn outside.
  - Yes, we do charge for the theft of items and also for the inconvenience of replacing those stolen items.
  - We do not ask more than most short-term rentals, we ask that you perform a few minor tidy-up things so our housekeeper can come in at 10 am and they have a 7-hour window to clean the 3,600 sq ft. home, make the beds, do the laundry, wipe everything down, and get the home ready for the next guests at 5 pm.
  
  We're sorry if you had difficulties with your mother, but we do all we can to make the best possible stay for each of our guests. We have over 80 wonderful 5-star reviews from guests who have enjoyed our home and shared their experiences with us.
